How To Avoid Rising Water Costs

Save Some Green with These Plumbing Tips

St. Patrick’s Day is the day to look for the leprechaun’s pot of gold. However, instead of looking for mythical creatures with hidden gold, there is another color that homeowners love, and that color is green.

Taking every opportunity to save money on a home’s plumbing is a sure way to make sure there is enough “green” to go around this holiday. Here are a few tips to help homeowners get lucky and save money on their water and plumbing bills.

Turn the Water Off

The first step to saving money on water bills is simply to use less water. The more time the tap spends turned off, the more money saved. So, the question is, what are some opportunities to turn the water off, so it isn’t wasting money?

Bathroom rituals are the first place to look. Despite the public service Sesame Street has done to encourage people to turn off the water, too many people still run the water while shaving or brushing their teeth. Even if the water is only running for a couple of minutes, turning the water off during these rituals can save around 50 gallons of water a week.

Kitchen water usage is also a good place to get control of water bills. Instead of rinsing dishes before going into the dishwasher, scrape them into the garbage. Upgrading the dishwasher can save a lot of water because new models of dishwashers can wash a full load with as little as 4 gallons of water.

Do Baths or Showers Use Less Water?

There are a few things to take into consideration. The shower length is crucial in determining the showerhead’s water usage and flow rate. A low-flow showerhead will use far less water in a normal shower than an average bath.

On the other hand, if bathing is done without filling the tub, there is a good case to be made that a bath uses less water. A bath can be enjoyed for a longer period without using as much water compared to a long, indulgent shower.

To determine what is best for a particular person, plug the tub during a shower and see how much water is used. If the water level is higher than what would run for a bath, bathing is the best option to save water—turning the water off while lathering can also reduce water usage.

Pay Attention to What Gets Flushed

Toilets use a large percentage of the water that a home will use in a month. One of the things that a family can do to save water from flushes is to prevent a clogged toilet by paying attention to what gets flushed. The only item that should be flushed down the toilet is toilet paper.

A clogged toilet wastes water because of the impulse to flush multiple times to break a clog loose. Each extra flush wastes water unnecessarily and doesn’t fix the underlying problem. If a clogged toilet is a common problem, homeowners may need a plumber to ensure there isn’t a bigger problem in the sewer line.
